Capella Prolationum

Capella Prolationum is a vocal ensemble created by La Danserye, whose primary goal is to recreate vocal musical practices from the 15th to the 18th centuries, with a particular focus on the 16th and 17th centuries.

The ensemble was conceived as a laboratory for vocal experimentation, based on the study, research, and historically informed performance of the repertoire from this period.

A key aspect of their approach is the exclusive use of original sources, both from a theoretical perspective and in the practical interpretation of plainchant, counterpoint, and canto de órgano (polyphony). This approach allows for a more faithful recreation of historical musical practices, all viewed through the lens of period-specific music pedagogy.

Biography

Capella Prolationum presented its first project in 2013 at the 17th Festival de Música Antigua de Úbeda y Baeza, becoming a resident ensemble of the festival alongside La Danserye. Together, they have developed various projects focused on the recovery of Hispano-American musical heritage, including recordings dedicated to Mexican composer Francisco López Capillas (Lindoro, 2014) and previously unpublished villancicos by Gaspar Fernández (IbsClassical, 2015). In 2015, they were invited to the 4th International Sacred Music Festival of Bogotá, where they premiered a commissioned program featuring music from the archive of the Catedral Primada of Bogotá. From 2015 to 2019, they received further commissions from the Festival de Música Antigua de Úbeda y Baeza to revive music from the archives of the Cathedral of Baeza (“Counter-Reformation Penitential Polyphony” and “A Compline Service”) and the Cathedral of Puebla de los Ángeles (Mexico). These projects garnered significant acclaim from specialized critics.

In 2016, the ensemble was commissioned by the Fundación Juan March in Madrid to create a concert program centered on imperial music related to Charles V, which was subsequently performed at various Spanish festivals, including:

  • Festival de Música Antigua de Úbeda y Baeza (2016)
  • Festival de Música Antigua “Mare Musicum” de Roquetas de Mar (Almería) (2017)
  • Festival de Música Antigua de Sevilla (2018)
  • Inaugural Concert of the Festival Palentia Antiqva (2019)
  • Concert Series of the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo in Santander (2019)
  • Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada (2021)

Additionally, in 2016 and 2017, they premiered two new programs at the Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada, featuring previously unknown music by Sebastián Durón (“Vespers of Our Lady”), Mateo Romero, and Diego de Pontac (“A Requiem Service”). In 2018, the ensemble performed Monteverdi’s Vespers alongside La Fenice, conducted by Jean Tubéry, at the Festival de Música Antigua de Úbeda y Baeza.

In 2022, Capella Prolationum participated in the Grandes Autores e Intérpretes de la Música series, organized by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, with the project “Gian Andrea Doria: Music in the Galleys of Philip II”, performed at the Auditorio Nacional de Madrid to great acclaim. In 2024, they premiered “Susanne un jour: Journeys of a Song,” a project focused on the reconstruction of the Missa Susanne un jour by Catalan composer Pere Riquet, once again at the Festival de Música Antigua de Úbeda y Baeza.

The ensemble comprises a flexible roster of highly trained and experienced vocalists, many of whom are members of internationally renowned ensembles and have performed at major festivals and musical events worldwide, such as:
