Love for Puebla: The Exile of Bishop Palafox and the Music for the Consecration of Puebla Cathedral
The concert is based on the research of Luisa Vilar-Payá into the remarkable connections observed between the musical content of eight 17th-century booklets preserved in Puebla Cathedral, the 1650 chronicle written by Antonio Tamariz, the liturgy of the consecration of the Cathedral (on 18 April 1649), the nine-day celebration, and the farewell of the illustrious Bishop Juan de Palafox (on 6 May 1649). The plainchant derives from Tamariz’s descriptions of the consecration, while the polyphony includes works of extraordinary musical quality composed by the Málaga-born composer Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla (1590–1664), chapel master of Puebla Cathedral, and Philippe Rogier (c.1560–1596), a Franco-Flemish composer in the service of Philip II whose music circulated widely throughout Spanish America.
